Your Drum Lesson Outlet

If you want to make a dramatic improvement in your playing, a drum lesson is vital. This goes for drummers of any type. Whether you play a drum set, hand drums, marching drums, percussion, and so on.

To be honest, you're getting short changed if you focus on just one area of drumming. They're ALL related, and share common threads. A drum lesson can help with areas your comfortable with AND introduce you instruments and techniques that you may not have learned about otherwise.

The BIG Question is: "How Do I Get Drum Lessons?". Easier than you might think. You simply have to decide which route you want to take. A lesson can be obtained in several ways:

Online Drum Lessons

Ah yes, the internet. We wouldn't be having this conversation if it weren't for the world wide web. With this incredible tool you can access a wide range of online drum lessons.

My favorite place to get free online drum lessons is freedrumlessons.com

Books, Audio, & Video

Pick a preference. Instruction is available in the time-tested formats of Audio (CDs), Video (VHS or DVD), and Books (you know...with paper). Which one to choose? Here's are a few things to consider:

SIDE NOTE: When choosing a book, auido, or video, a big pitfall is that the playing level may be too advanced or too basic. Be sure that the content description is clear on who it is geared towards.

Books

Learning to read music is MUST for anyone that desires to excel in drumming. You have read music to learn the rudiments. Reading is also needed to learn the proper execution of grooves and fills. The only way to get this this knowledge is by following a book. Books can be found that start at the very beginning for reading music to very complex patterns.

Before learning to read music from a book, my technique was poor, my stick control was sloppy, and my range of style was limited. I highly encourage the purchase of a few good drum lesson books that teach reading and rudiments. Find a great selection of books at Stagepass.

Audio

Audio adds the element of sound. Most of us learn by hearing. Even after years of playing by following written music, I learn most of the songs my band plays by listening to the original composers then copy them (with my own style of course). Audio is a great tool to learn by. Check out the audio drum lessons offered at Stagepass.

Video

Some people prefer to buy videos where a drum instructor plays a part and you follow. Rewind him- and play again! There are quite a few videos offered that come in either VCR or DVD format.

Whether you're looking for a lesson that shows the basics, one that specializes in a musical genre, or certain playing style, it can be found. Select from a wide range of affordable drum and percussion videos at Stagepass.

One-On-One Instruction

Before the internet and multimedia sources, drum lessons were obtained from a teacher giving one-on-one instruction. This "personal" guidance is still an extremely effect way to learn and grow.

I personally took lessons for development of rudimental music reading skills. I was amazed at how quickly my technique improved. In fact, almost fifteen years later my chops are just as sharp. WHAT AN INVESTMENT!
