Have you ever thought about having a custom drum set made just for you? The thought of playing a kit that is fashioned to your specs with the best quality materials gets the blood pumping eh?
There are many custom drum makers around the world today. So which one should you choose? That will depend on several factors, not the least of which- do you like their stuff? But just as important, there are a few things to look at when researching.
Let's take a look at three popular custom drum companies that provide good examples of what I'm getting at.
DW Drum
Formally known as Drum Workshop (DW), this company has 1.) been around for a while. They stared producing drum equipment in 1974 with the trap case seat, then a kick pedal in 1977.
Their first full drum kit was introduced in 1979. DW Drum has certainly stood the test of time and has become highly praised among today's best artists.
In 2000, DW Drum created a new line of drums called Pacific Drums and Percussion (PDP) to meet the demand of student to semi-professional level players.
PDP drums are made with some of the same designs as the custom kits but mass production techniques are used to cut costs while making high quality drum kits.
Orange County Drum
Also known as OCDP. These guys offer a couple of things that you should look for. The first is a totally 2.) unique product. An example of this would be their vented snare drum. After all, if you pay for "custom", why should it simply look like everything else out there?
Another key ingredient should be 3.) "unlimited drum set configurations" (as OCDP puts it). Since IT IS custom, the company should be able to handle whatever you can dream up, and do it with a smile!
Orange County Drum and Percussion has hundreds of colors and finishes to choose from. These include acrylic urethanes, wraps, high-pressure laminates, metal finishes, exotic wood finishes, and even animal prints and textures! Is your imagination starting to run loose? Mine too :-)
Pork Pie Drum
Started in 1987 as one man's hobby. After almost two decades, Pork Pie Drum is still a small operation with only six employees and operates out of a 1,000 square foot facility.
If you're looking for a custom kit, it is safe to say that you're concerned about the 4.) highest standards and the greatest attention to detail, not the price. These offered by Pork Pie.
Know that there are many small drum builders out there providing this type of quality. Just make sure that their mission is to satisfy your wishes, not just to churn out another kit.
In review, you should look for a custom drum maker that :
- ...has been around for a while
- ...has a unique product
- ...can produce unlimited drum set configurations
- ...has the highest standards and the greatest attention to detail
